So You Want to Learn to Scuba Dive?

Learn to DiveLearn to Dive!  It all starts here!

So you want to join the world of SCUBA diving?  Hopefully, this will answer some of the most common questions we get asked.  If you don’t find your answer here, contact us and we’ll be happy to answer all your diving questions…  Here is how you begin.

You can sign up for our Open Water Diver Class by calling the store or stopping in to meet our friendly staff.  There are two different options for classes.  The first is an E-Learning class.  You will do all the academic portion of Open Water online at PADI and the pool portion with The Dive Shop. For many of our students, this is the most convenient option.  The other option is a traditional classroom setting where you will do some home based study and then we will review all the academics in our onsite classroom.

For the pool portion, you will need your own mask, snorkel, boots and fins.  We will supply everything else!  You will need these before your first pool session.  As a student you will receive a 10% discount on these (or any additional) items at The Dive Shop.

So, what happens next?

If you have chosen the traditional class,  we will meet for our first classroom session (usually on the Wednesday before the pool) from 6-8pm at The Dive Shop.   Your instructor will introduce himself/herself and our dive assistants.  Your instructor will thoroughly explain the program to you, answer any questions or concerns you may have and review the upcoming class/pool schedule.   Best of all you’ll get the opportunity to set up your dive equipment for the first time!

If you have chosen the e-learning option we will schedule an orientation before your first pool session (usually on the Friday before the pool) from 6-8pm at The Dive Shop.  Again, your instructor will introduce himself/herself and our dive assistants.  We will answer any questions or concerns you may have,  review the upcoming pool schedule and complete a quick e-learning quick quiz, as well as set up your dive equipment for the first time!

Then it’s off to the pool…

Next up – the first of two or three pool sessions – this is where it really gets fun!  You will head to the pool in order to learn the skills involved in enjoying SCUBA.

On your first day in the pool you will do a quick swim evaluation.  You’ll complete an swim of 200 yards, using whatever stroke you like best.  Then you’ll do a 10-minute float/tread.

Next…you will get to breathe underwater for the first time!  That’s what you’re here for and it is an incredible experience!

Each pool session will be used to build on the skills learned in the prior session – and you will become more and more proficient with your SCUBA skills, and then it will be time for:

The final part of your SCUBA course will be your Open Water Certification Dives. This is a two-day process in which you complete four dives with your instructor and absolutely assure yourself (and your instructor) that you can comfortably and competently perform all of the skills that a diver should be able to do to stay safe.  But, this is also a time for fun.  After completing a few skills at the beginning, you will be taken on a guided tour to really get a great diving experience and apply all those new skills you learned!

We routinely offer this training in a local environment from Memorial Day through October.  Check our schedule here. You can also come on one of our fabulous trips  throughout the year to do your certification dives or you can get a referral from us so that you can complete your certification dives anywhere in the world. It’s up to you.  You have one year from the end of class to do these dives.

If you choose to complete your certification dives with us, we suggest you sign up for those dives immediately so that you are assured a spot.

The Big Question ….  How Much?

So this is where everyone asks the big question … what does it cost? Depending on which class option you decide to use, the cost is different.  If you choose to do E-Learning the cost is $499. This includes the pool sessions and the e-learning access code to the online course. We will provide you with the access code you need when you sign up for class as well as the e-learning PADI Crew Pack.  If you choose to do the traditional classroom , the fee is $469. This includes the pool sessions, and your PADI course materials.   Aside from your basic equipment, the only additional cost is your certification dives — because it depends on where you choose to do them!

That’s it! – You will soon be a fully-certified Open Water SCUBA diver and will be for the rest of your life.  It is going to be a pleasure getting to know you.  We hope you will enjoy the same level of excitement and adventure for years to come.  Once again, WELCOME TO THE DIVE SHOP! Let’s get diving!
